A growing trend on platforms like TikTok shows preteen girls—some as young as 8 or 9—using advanced skincare products like retinol, exfoliating acids, and facial cleansing devices. While skincare routines may seem harmless or even healthy, dermatologists are now warning that many of these products can be damaging to young, developing skin.
Children’s skin is naturally resilient and does not need the intense formulations designed for adults. Ingredients such as salicylic acid, glycolic acid, and retinoids, which are meant to treat acne or aging in mature skin, may strip the skin barrier in tweens. This can result in irritation, dryness, increased sensitivity, and even long-term skin conditions like eczema or contact dermatitis.
Part of the issue is social media influence. Skincare influencers and product hauls glamorize daily multi-step routines, prompting kids to imitate what they see online. Parents, wanting to support their children’s interests or bond with them, may unknowingly buy products that are inappropriate for young skin. Experts emphasize the importance of simple, age-appropriate skincare—gentle cleansers, moisturizers, and sunscreen are all most children need.
